Foot Size During Pregnancy

During pregnancy, changes in foot size are normal due to various factors. Hormonal shifts can cause water retention, which can cause swelling in the feet and ankles, known as edema. This can cause discomfort. The swelling can temporarily increase foot size by a shoe size or more. The hormone relaxin, which loosens ligaments in preparation for childbirth, can also affect the structure of the feet, causing them to spread out and possibly increase in size. As a result, many pregnant women find that their shoes feel tighter or that they need to switch to larger sizes during pregnancy. Expectant mothers need to prioritize comfortable, supportive footwear to alleviate discomfort and reduce the risk of foot problems. If you are having problems in the feet and ankles during pregnancy, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for an exam and appropriate treatment options.

Pregnant women with swollen feet can be treated with a variety of different methods that are readily available. What Foot Problems Can Arise During Pregnancy?

One problem that can occur is overpronation, which occurs when the arch of the foot flattens and tends to roll inward.  This can cause pain and discomfort in your heels while you’re walking or even just standing up, trying to support your baby.

Another problem is edema, or swelling in the extremities. This often affects the feet during pregnancy but tends to occur in the later stages.

How Can I Keep My Feet Healthy During Pregnancy?

  • Wearing orthotics can provide extra support for the feet and help distribute weight evenly
  • Minimize the amount of time spent walking barefoot
  • Wear shoes with good arch support
  • Wear shoes that allow for good circulation to the feet
  • Elevate feet if you experience swelling
  • Massage your feet
  • Get regular, light exercise, such as walking, to promote blood circulation to the feet

Common Foot Injuries Among Active Children

Foot and ankle injuries have become increasingly prevalent in highly active children, posing significant challenges to their athletic pursuits. With a growing number of youngsters participating in organized sports, the incidence of both acute and overuse injuries has surged. These injuries often stem from the rigorous demands of training routines, with many young athletes engaging in multiple sports and activities throughout the week. Overuse injuries arise from the repetitive strain placed on the child’s musculoskeletal system without sufficient rest. This is especially true during periods of heightened training intensity like the beginning of a new season, tournaments, or sports camps. Biomechanical factors such as flat feet, limb length discrepancies, and improper footwear can further increase the risk of injury. Child athletes are particularly susceptible to injuries at tendon attachment sites, joint surfaces, and growth plates. Conditions like Sever’s disease and stress fractures are common. These conditions necessitate prompt diagnosis and tailored treatment plans from a foot doctor. If your active child experiences heel pain, foot swelling, or discomfort while wearing shoes, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist.

Making sure that your children maintain good foot health is very important as they grow. If you have any questions, contact one of our doctors of Advanced Foot & Ankle Medical Center. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet during childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care. Here are some things to consider...

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet.

Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable.

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age, toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet.

Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus.

Be watchful for any pain or injury.

Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible.

Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play.

Uncommon Causes of Swollen Feet

Swollen feet can stem from various unexpected sources beyond the usual suspects like injury or fluid retention. One such cause of swelling, or edema, may be your footwear. Wearing ill-fitting shoes or high heels for prolonged periods of time can impede proper circulation, leading to swelling. A lesser-known cause could be dietary habits, particularly excessive salt intake, which can cause water retention in the body, resulting as swollen feet. Certain medications, such as antidepressants or blood pressure drugs, might also induce swollen feet as a side effect. In some cases, allergies to ingredients in skincare or cosmetic products can trigger inflammation, including in the feet. Additionally, long flights or car rides, where prolonged sitting limits movement, can result in swollen feet due to decreased blood circulation. If your feet have become swollen and remain so, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist who can help you to manage this condition.

Swollen feet can be a sign of an underlying condition. If you have any concerns, contact one of our doctors of Advanced Foot & Ankle Medical Center. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Swollen feet are a common ailment among pregnant women and people who stand or sit for extended periods. Aging may increase the possibility of swollen feet and patients who are obese often notice when their feet are swelling too. There may be medical reasons why swollen feet occur:

  • Phlebitis - A condition that causes the veins to become inflamed and can also cause leg pain.
  • Liver disease - This may lead to low blood levels of albumin which is a protein. This can cause fluid in the blood to pass into the tissues and several areas of the body can become swollen.
  • Heart failure - When the heart doesn’t pump properly the blood that is normally pumped back to the heart can pool in the veins of the legs causing swollen feet.
  • Kidney disease - One of the main functions of the kidneys is releasing excess fluid in the body. This type of condition can make it difficult for the kidneys to function properly, and as a result the feet may become swollen.
  • Deep-vein thrombosis (DVT)- This is a serious condition where blood clots form in the veins of the legs. They can block the return of blood from the legs to the heart which may cause the feet to swell. It is important to be treated by a podiatrist if this condition is present.

Swollen feet can also be caused by bone and tendon conditions, including fractures, arthritis, and tendinitis. Additionally, there may be skin and toenail conditions and an infection may cause the feet to swell. Patients who take medicine to treat high blood pressure may be prone to getting swollen feet.

Many patients elevate their feet to help relieve the swelling and this is generally a temporary remedy. When a podiatrist is consulted the reason behind the swelling can be uncovered and subsequently treated.

How to Make Sure Shoes Fit Well

Ensuring your shoes fit properly is critical for comfort and foot health. Begin by measuring your feet later in the day when they are at their largest, and stand while measuring to mimic weight-bearing conditions. Take note of both length and width, including the arch length, as this affects shoe fit. Keep in mind that sizes can vary between shoe brands, so always prioritize fit over the number on the label. If your feet are different sizes, opt for the larger size to prevent discomfort. During fitting, wear the same type of socks or foot coverings you plan to wear with the shoes. Leave a thumb's width of space at the front and back of the shoes to accommodate natural foot swelling and movement. For personalized advice and to address any specific concerns, it is suggested you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist who can offer you invaluable guidance.

Finding a properly-fitting shoe is important in reducing injuries and preventing foot problems. For more information about treatment, contact one of our doctors from Advanced Foot & Ankle Medical Center. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Proper Shoe Fitting

A common concern when it comes to foot health, having properly fitted shoes can help prevent injuries to the foot. Out feet affect our posture and gait, which in turn affects the biomechanics and overall bodily structure. With 33 joints, 26 bones, and over 100 ligaments, the potential for serious injury is much greater than one realizes. Although the feet cease growth in adulthood, they still change shape as they mature. Here are some factors to consider when it comes to investing in proper fitting shoes:

  • Be sure the shoes fit correctly right away
  • Ensure the ball of your foot fits comfortably in the widest portion of the shoes
  • Even though they may look fashionable, improper fitting shoes can either create adverse conditions or exacerbate existing ones you may already have
  • Walk along a carpeted surface to ensure the shoes comfortably fit during normal activity

Keeping in mind how shoes fit the biomechanics of your body, properly-fitting shoes are vitally important. Fortunately, it is not difficult to acquire footwear that fits correctly. Be sure to wear shoes that support the overall structure of your body. Do your feet a favor and invest in several pairs of well-fitted shoes today.

Buschke-Ollendorff Syndrome

Buschke-Ollendorff syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized by the presence of skin abnormalities, typically in the form of firm, non-tender, rubbery bumps called connective tissue nevi, and bone abnormalities, such as osteopoikilosis. These can occur on the feet. It is inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern, meaning one copy of the altered gene in each cell is sufficient to cause the disorder. While the skin lesions are usually asymptomatic, they can cause cosmetic concerns. Osteopoikilosis often goes unnoticed and does not typically cause symptoms. Diagnosis is usually made based on clinical examination and imaging studies, such as X-rays. Management of Buschke-Ollendorff syndrome involves monitoring for any potential complications and addressing cosmetic concerns. Podiatrists can help by providing supportive care and addressing any foot-related issues that may arise, such as discomfort or deformities associated with osteopoikilosis. If you develop skin abnormalities affecting the feet, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and care.

Some foot conditions may require additional professional care. If you have any concerns, contact one of our doctors of Advanced Foot & Ankle Medical Center. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Rare Foot Conditions

The majority of foot conditions are common and can be treated by a podiatrist.  Standard diagnostic procedures are generally used to identify specific conditions and treatment can be rendered. A podiatrist also treats rare foot conditions which can be difficult to diagnose and may need extra attention and care.

There are many rare foot conditions that can affect children. Some of these can include:

  • Freiberg’s disease
  • Kohler’s disease
  • Maffucci syndrome

Freiberg’s disease - This can be seen as a deterioration and flattening of a metatarsal bone that exists in the ball of the foot. It typically affects pre-teen and teenage girls, but can affect anyone at any age. Symptoms that can accompany this can be swelling, stiffness, and the patient may limp.

Kohler’s disease - This often targets the bone in the arch of the foot and affects younger boys. It can lead to an interruption of the blood supply which ultimately can lead to bone deterioration. The patient may limp or experience tenderness, swelling, and redness.

Maffucci syndrome - This affects the long bones in a child’s foot leading to the development of abnormal bone lesions. They are benign growths and typically develop in early childhood and the bones may be susceptible to breaking.

A podiatrist can properly diagnose and treat all types of rare foot conditions. If your child is affected by any of these symptoms or conditions, please don’t hesitate to call our office so the correct treatment method can begin.
