The Importance of Foot Check-Ups For Older Adults

Regular foot assessments and timely management of foot-related issues in older adults play a huge role in maintaining mobility and reducing the risk of falls, which are major concerns for this age group. The feet can change in structure and function as people age. Especially when paired with conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, and circulatory problems, this can significantly impact a person’s ability to walk and perform daily activities safely. By addressing these issues early through routine podiatry care, potential problems can be managed or corrected before they lead to more serious complications and falls. This approach helps older adults both retain their motor performance and independence, as well as reduce their fear of falling. Fear itself can lead to a decrease in physical activity, further diminishing muscle strength and balance, which increases the risk of falls. It is suggested that elderly people with possible foot and aging concerns make regular appointments with a podiatrist, to address any potential problems quickly.

Proper foot care is something many older adults forget to consider. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact one of our doctors from Advanced Foot & Ankle Medical Center. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

The Elderly and Their Feet

As we age we start to notice many changes in our body, but the elder population may not notice them right away. Medical conditions may prevent the elderly to take notice of their foot health right away. Poor vision is a lead contributor to not taking action for the elderly.

Common Conditions

  • Neuropathy – can reduce feeling in the feet and can hide many life-threatening medical conditions.
  • Reduced flexibility – prevents the ability of proper toenail trimming, and foot cleaning. If left untreated, it may lead to further medical issues.
  • Foot sores – amongst the older population can be serious before they are discovered. Some of the problematic conditions they may face are:
  • Gouging toenails affecting nearby toe
  • Shoes that don’t fit properly
  • Pressure sores
  • Loss of circulation in legs & feet
  • Edema & swelling of feet and ankles

Susceptible Infections

Diabetes and poor circulation can cause general loss of sensitivity over the years, turning a simple cut into a serious issue.

Causes and Symptoms of Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot, or tinea pedis, is a common fungal skin infection. It can be recognized by raw, cracked, or scaly skin, affecting the skin between the toes. Other symptoms of athlete’s foot are redness, itching, and in some cases, a burning sensation. Athletes’s foot can happen to anyone who comes into direct contact with infected skin or contaminated surfaces, like bathroom floors and towels. Factors such as moist, sweaty feet, skin damage, and weakened immune systems increase susceptibility. For persistent or severe cases, a podiatrist can provide a tailored treatment plan to effectively manage athlete’s foot and prevent recurrence. If you have developed athlete’s foot, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for an exam and prescribed medication.

Athlete’s foot is an inconvenient condition that can be easily reduced with the proper treatment. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact one of our doctors from Advanced Foot & Ankle Medical Center.  Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Cuboid Syndrome in Athletes

Cuboid syndrome is a prevalent source of lateral midfoot discomfort in athletes. It is thought that it might happen when there's a small problem with the joint in the middle of the foot. Symptoms closely resemble those of ligament sprains. Definitive diagnostic tests for the condition are currently unavailable. However, some studies show good responses to joint manipulation and external support. Despite the absence of evidence-based guidelines, diagnosing cuboid syndrome often relies on recognizing a combination of signs and symptoms. Manipulation of the cuboid is typically considered as an initial treatment option unless contraindicated. If you are an athlete and have persistent pain in your midfoot area, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist to have your foot examined and a determination made as to whether cuboid syndrome might be the cause. Then, you can get the right treatment.

Cuboid syndrome, also known as cuboid subluxation, occurs when the joints and ligaments near the cuboid bone in the foot become torn. If you have cuboid syndrome, consult with one of our doctors from Advanced Foot & Ankle Medical Center. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Cuboid syndrome is a common cause of lateral foot pain, which is pain on the outside of the foot. The condition may happen suddenly due to an ankle sprain, or it may develop slowly overtime from repetitive tension through the bone and surrounding structures.

Causes

The most common causes of cuboid syndrome include:

  • Injury – The most common cause of this ailment is an ankle sprain.
  • Repetitive Strain – Tension placed through the peroneus longus muscle from repetitive activities such as jumping and running may cause excessive traction on the bone causing it to sublux.
  • Altered Foot Biomechanics – Most people suffering from cuboid subluxation have flat feet.

Symptoms

A common symptom of cuboid syndrome is pain along the outside of the foot which can be felt in the ankle and toes. This pain may create walking difficulties and may cause those with the condition to walk with a limp.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of cuboid syndrome is often difficult, and it is often misdiagnosed. X-rays, MRIs and CT scans often fail to properly show the cuboid subluxation. Although there isn’t a specific test used to diagnose cuboid syndrome, your podiatrist will usually check if pain is felt while pressing firmly on the cuboid bone of your foot.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are ice therapy, rest, exercise, taping, and orthotics.

Foot Injuries From Running

Foot injuries are common among runners, and often stem from overuse, wearing improper footwear, or biomechanical issues. Conditions like plantar fasciitis, stress fractures, and Achilles tendinitis are prevalent. Plantar fasciitis causes heel pain due to inflammation of the tissue along the bottom of the foot. Stress fractures result from repetitive impact, leading to small cracks in the bones. Achilles tendinitis affects the Achilles tendon, causing pain and stiffness. To prevent these injuries, it is helpful for runners to practice prevention techniques, including wearing appropriate shoes with proper support and cushioning, increasing mileage gradually, and incorporating rest days into training schedules. Additionally, it is beneficial to perform strengthening and stretching exercises targeting the feet and lower legs. If you enjoy running, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for professional guidance on foot protection from running.

Sports Related Foot and Ankle Injuries

Foot and ankle injuries are a common occurrence when it comes to athletes of any sport. While many athletes dismiss the initial aches and pains, the truth is that ignoring potential foot and ankle injuries can lead to serious problems. As athletes continue to place pressure and strain the area further, a mild injury can turn into something as serious as a rupture and may lead to a permanent disability. There are many factors that contribute to sports related foot and ankle injuries, which include failure to warm up properly, not providing support or wearing bad footwear. Common injuries and conditions athletes face, including:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Plantar Fasciosis
  • Achilles Tendinitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains

Sports related injuries are commonly treated using the RICE method. This includes rest, applying ice to the injured area, compression and elevating the ankle. More serious sprains and injuries may require surgery, which could include arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery. Rehabilitation and therapy may also be required in order to get any recovering athlete to become fully functional again. Any unusual aches and pains an athlete sustains must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.
